A prolific writer, a proprietor, a renowned social activist, Gopal Jalan is actively associated with the cultural world of Assam and his contribution to the Assamese society is invaluable. From his childhood days he has been writing in various newspapers, magazines etc. At present Mr. Jalan is popularly known as an essayist. He was born in Pathshala (Assam) and till now he has written and published Fourteen books. The present book ‘Atmabikshan’ in Assamese is his 15th book and all the other books Mr. Jalan has written and published in Assamese are – Itibasok, Satyanusandhan, Aatmoupolabddhi, Sintar Ek Suti, Jeevanar Batat Ek Anubhuti, Jeevanar Batat Ek Chinta, Jeebanor Batat Ek Prabah, Natun Dinor Pratyasha, Protyahban and Corona. Hindi books are – Assam Pravah, Samay Pravah, Drishtikon and Jindagi Ki Rah Par Ek Chintan Prabah. Besides this, Mr. Jalan has edited number of books. In this book, alongwith Literature, Society and Culture the writer also describes about the ups and downs of contemporary political scenario. He has received Dr. Ambedkar Prize in 2004 for his immense contribution in the field of social development. In the world of cinema, Mr. Jalan is also a known figure as a producer. The movie ‘Dinabandhu’ which Mr. Jalan co-produced won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Assamese in the year 2005. In 2017, Mr. Jalan produced a short movie named ‘Liakat’ that has honoured in various national and international film festivals and won the best short film in Guwahati International Film Festival (GIFF) organised by the Government of Assam. ‘Letters from Deuta’, another short movie produced by Mr. Jalan in 2018 has been selected and screened on several national and international festivals. A documentary produced by Mr. Jalan alongwith Monjyoti Saikia “Along in the Combat Zone” (A biography of Harekrishna Mahanta Dev, Satradhikar of Barangjuli Satra) also acknowledged in the National and International level. Besides, Mr. Jalan is the executive editor of ‘Bartapokhili’, a complete Magazine of language, literature and culture of Assam and also the trustee of Bhavendra Nath Saikia’s ‘Aarohan’, ‘Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust’ and ‘Silpi Sahayya Nidhi Nyasa’.
